The Hotel Latvija embodied everything Latvians hated about the Soviet system - its ugly silhouette, the humiliating Beriozka hard currency shop, doormen barring locals except prostitutes and black marketeers. And the Lenin statue right in front... But in the 1990's, Ilyich disappeared, Scandinavian investors turned the 26-story eyesore into a friendly mid-range hotel and all was forgiven. Feel the improvement as you ride the glass elevator to the top floor Skyline Bar to enjoy breathtaking views over cocktails with whacky names. DJs and theme nights add to the fun, but they should drop the silly entry charge for late arrivals - anyway, it's another reason to get in early. Do check out the hotel's ESPA spa paradise too.
