Nicknamed "the land of blue lakes," Latvia' s eastern region Latgale is also renowned for its people's hospitality. And you won't get a warmer welcome than at Meža Skuķi. This small guesthouse deep in the forest is run by Aija Skuķe and her mother Broņa, who spoil guests with home-grown food (including their own honey), a sizzling traditional sauna and a lake filled with fish to swim and boat in to your heart' s delight.

A few days of Meža Skuķi therapy will take lines of your face and kilos off your shoulders.


Food & Drink: Enjoy home-cooked meals made entirely from stuff grown on the farm, washed down with hand-picked herbal teas.The pancakes are divine.

Sleep: The vacation cottage hosts just one group at a time, so you have the whole place and the lake to yourself.

Fun: Aija is a certified pirtniece (sauna master) and will swish the stress out of you with her birch besoms.


Transport: Drive 220 km south-east from Riga. Meža Skuķi is a good base for day trips to the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils and revered Aglona Basilica
