Just 50 km from Riga, Sigulda is like a giant health farm for worn out city slickers. Set in mega-pretty Gauja National Park, the valley trails were made for hiking, the medieval castles will enchant history buffs, and as generations of Latvian poets and painters can attest, the landscapes melt your heart in winter, spring, summer and - ah, autumn (sigh)... If falling leaves aren't your thing, get into multitudes of sports, some of which are listed below.
Food & Drink: Feast on legendary cakes at local favourite Mr. BISKVĪTS
(Ausekļa iela 9, Sigulda and at Turaida Castle), enjoy healthy, great value lunches in suburban-house-turned-restaurant Doma Cafe (Leona Paegles iela 15a, Sigulda), and sample venison, wild boar and hare north of the Gauja at elegant Kungu Rija (Krimulda).
Sleep: Feel the history at Hotel Sigulda, which began serving worn out aristocrats from St Petersburg in 1889. Go crazy in the adventure park and ski slope at Kaķīškalns Recreation Centre. Or soak in the hot tub at Kārumnieki, a family-owned guesthouse in a little corner of paradise just south of Sigulda town.
Transport: The bus or train gets you from Riga to Sigulda town in less than an hour, then there's a healthy walk to the attractions.
