Ignored by the railways and stranded inland, the busy world bypassed Kuldīga long ago. Thankfully, that helped this charming town in the heart of Kurzeme preserve its baroque architecture so well that it's awaiting UNESCO World Heritage listing. Beautiful buildings, cobblestone lanes and sweet canals create a romantic getaway that will put the rockiest relationship back on track, and fun festivals and good dining make it worth a visit even if you're not in lurvvvvv. Kuldīga' s nickname "the Venice of the north" is silly provincialism, but then again - not even Venice can boast the Ventas Rumba, Europe' s widest waterfall, complete with jumping fish!
Food & Drink: Munch on traditional potato-and-carrot sklandrauši pastries at Daigas beķereja (Liepājas iela 23), devour comfort foods given gourmet treatment at Goldingen Room (Baznīcas iela 2), and lap up awesome views of the rapids with original cuisine at Bangert's (Pils iela 1).
Sleep: Enjoy a classy stay in historic Hotel Metropole in the heart of Kuldīga. Live it up in a beautiful restored manor house at Hotel Virkas Muiža. Plunge into Ventas Rumba guesthouse, which is spectacularly located right beside the waterfall, and you can even jump under the cascades.
Transport: Regular buses run from Riga to Kuldīga. If you're driving, take in the scenic Abava River Valley along the way.
