Babīte Rhododendron Garden

Derived from the Greek words rhodon (meaning rose) and dendron (tree), rhododendrons are spectacular blooming bushes that melt human hearts every spring. And one of the finest collections of these botanical beauties are found just a short trip from Riga.

Spread over 11 hectares in a pine forest near the village of Spilva, the University of Latvia Babīte Rhododendron Garden is about science as well as aesthetics. Founded in 1980 by renowned botanist Professor Rihards Kodratovičs, the park is home to 119 rhododendron species and many more crosses, all adapted to Latvia's climate.

Latvians are a nation with green thumbs, and every spring and autumn the garden sells plants to add allure to allotments. And for music lovers, classical concerts held in Babīte at the end of May are a treat for all the senses.
